Work opportunities for IT professionals
THE PROFESSION
The computer are covered by the wider term Information Technology or IT, describing a convergence of office automation, telecommunications and computing and the technology continues to develop. This involves not only acquiring and processing of data but also storing distribution of information gathered. Information technology can be divided into Hardware, Software, Systems, IT enabled services and other support services.
Flexibility, strong interpersonal skills and a friendly disposition are highly valued traits in this industry. One need to keep updating oneself with the changing technology and the base line of this profession is performance and those who do not fare well finds oneself quickly outpaced because of the job demand.
Hardware
This term covers the physical elements of a computer system. The hardware sector is concerned with their design, development, assembly, manufacture and maintenance of computers. Hardware design and development is the function of engineers and computer scientist. Manufacture involves production and assembly of components, some of which can be locally sourced while others are imported. Jobs in hardware could be:
 |

Hardware technicians assist engineers. Their work is mostly in the field of maintenance and servicing computers. Technical training is required for this job. |
 |
Service Engineers |
Service Engineers posses a thorough understanding of complexities of hardware and software to be able to diagnose and rectify trouble. |
 |
Design Engineers |
Design Engineers are mainly engaged in the creation and development of product that can be manufactured and maintained economically, that perform satisfactorily, look good, and satisfy a market demand. The scope of this work also includes the designing of a new or improvement of an established engineering process. |
 |
Computer Scientists/Technologists/ Hardware Engineers |
Computer Scientists/Technologists/ Hardware Engineers can be involved in both research and design functions or the manufacturing and maintenance process. Here new designs are developed and modification of existing systems is done, to suit the growing needs of the computer industry. |

Software
Software is a set of programmed instructions that enable a computer to perform functions. The versatility of the tasks undertaken by the computer depends on its sophistication and the quality and complexity of the software provided.
 |
|
Software Developers/System Analysts/Software engineer |
Software Developers/ System Analysts/ Software engineer use a range of tools and programming methods to conceptualise, develop and construct various sets of software codes. Software is of two types - system software and application software. System software is required for running a computer (for example, Windows, DOS, Unix, Linux). They understand and outline the requirements of the software along with determining specifications of the required software. System Analysts works with Developers/ Engineers as a team. |
 |
|
System Architects |
System Architects develop programmes which integrate various hardware and software systems in a company to generate object oriented tasks. These object oriented tasks make computer usage very easy. In short, they help build up a total business system. The job involves analysing system needs of the client, auditing the preset system, identify and building up system logic, drawing up system algorithm, developing the system, system maintenance etc. |

Medical Transcriptions |
It's all about word for word translation. Medical transcription is a process by which orally dictated medical prescription, advice, results of diagnostic tests made by doctors and health professionals are converted into accurate and readable text form. It works like this. A doctor checks, diagnoses and simultaneously treats as many as 60-100 patients a day in a hospital. But keeping track of the patients' history, physical reports, clinical notes, office notes, operative reports, consultation notes, discharge summaries, letters, laboratory reports, x-ray reports, pathology reports, etc. is extremely difficult. That's where Medical Transcription comes in. A Medical Transcriptionist deciphers the doctor's discussions, which is usually recorded on a Dictaphone (by the doctor). Medical transcriptionists need good listening, language skills and knowledge of medical terminology. |
| Eligiblity:
- Graduation in any subject preferably in Bioscience/English -> Training in Medical Transcription
