I
hope you have browsed through the website and have fairly
gained an idea of what career is and what are the career
options available today? Now in the following sections
and subsections you would get a chance to explore the
self within you and understand oneself and your environment
better.

You
must be wondering What is Life Skills and How would
it help you? To answer this we should first understand
the term SKILLS
Write the word SKILLS on a piece of paper and brainstorm
what could be that discuss with your parents, friends,
elders and write it down.
So
let's see what have you come up with may be reading,
writing, dancing, singing, playing cricket etc yes you
are on the right track. Let me tell you now what skills
are:
Skills
are abilities acquired through practice and patience
i.e. they are ability to use Know-how to complete tasks.


An
International organization called World Health Organisation
has defined me i.e. Life Skills as abilities to adjust
to changing situations in and positive manner which
will help you in facing challenges in your day to day
life.
Once
you know about me in detail it will influence the way
you feel about yourself and the way you perceive others.
I will improve your productivity, self esteem, self
confidence and interpersonal relationship, negotiating
skills for personal and social interests. In short I
will help you deal with the demands and challenges of
everyday life by developing in you abilities.
Now
moving on let me introduce you to my 10 core parts i.e.
10 core life skills which are broadly divided into 3
general categories - social skills, thinking skills,
and negotiating skills. Below you would find the skills
paired for better understanding. You need to know, understand
and use these skills consciously and effectively to
put me in use.

Now
out of the 10 core life skills you must be wondering
which one comes under which category. Here let me
tell you under:

Coping with stress

Coping with emotion
Let
me tell you the few important things about life skills
before we proceed:

We are all the time using these life skills in different
situations.

These can be learnt and enhanced throughout our
life
-
Many life skills are used in combination for dealing
with certain situations.
-
Rehearsing the use of life skills in simple situations
makes it easy for utilizing them in complex situations.

Let
me introduce you to my two very important friends
of mine and the first pair Self Awareness and Empathy….
So let's explore and find out who they are and what
they do? Why they are important? And how they would
help you?
Hi!!!
I am SELF AWARENESS is one of my most important part
which is basically you, this skill or ability in you
will help you to know about your self, your character,
desires, likes, dislikes and your strengths and weakness
keeping in mind your physical, mental, emotional,
social, and sexual aspects. Being aware of your strengths
and weakness will help in building your self esteem
and self confidence.
Knowing
about yourself is necessary for developing a positive
attitude towards life. It helps in making decisions,
prioritizing your work, and reasoning out many actions
and reactions of yours. In the star below you will
find a few examples of how you could be self aware.
To
understand this skill/ability better I will want you
to do the following activity. In a sheet of paper
draw what is given in box 2, fill in the empty spaces.
You could either write or draw to illustrates all
that has been asked. Use all your favorite colours
(sketch pens, pastels, crayons etc.) to describe yourself.
And incase you will want to tell something more you
could add on to it also.
I
want you to think about each area and then jot them
down. Do it leisurely, don't hurry. Use different
colours and make it colorful.

How
do you feel now !!!!!!!! Does the paper look like
a you are standing in front of a mirror. Yesss !!!!

once you are done with that go ahead with the other
activity which is box 3

So
did you enjoy both the activities … Now do you
have an idea as who you are and why are you on planet
earth and how special you are!!!!!
Now
let me tell you the importance of this activity, by
this you could understand what you think about yourself,
your abilities, characteristics, attributes, traits,
deeds, likes, dislikes. This self concept will help
boost your confidence.
I
want you to keep certain things in mind as in
-
No one is perfect. We all have negative & positive
qualities / features
-
Different people have different likes and dislikes
so you should respect every person and their qualities.
I mean you need to adapt to people and situations
as and when required.
-
Good qualities that are already present in you need
to be enhanced and added every now and then
-
And the qualities you need to change, firstly be
aware of them and try and change them into better
and good qualities purposefully.
-
But keep in mind that there are few things that
you cannot change, so we must concentrate on those
we can.
-
You need to accept what you cannot change.
Now
take both the worksheets which talks all about you
and stick somewhere you can see it every day once.
After
Self awareness meet my another friend empathy
Hi
!!! I am Empathy, after knowing about you now comes
the turn to know others. You must be thinking we have
heard the word sympathy but what could empathy mean.
By this knowing this skill /ability you will be able
to handle diverse situation because by the end of
this activity you will be able to empathize with others.

Now
let me explain to you Empathy, which is the ability
to be sensitive to another person's situation i.e.
to understand their happiness, concerns, worries,
fears, and needs. This is an extremely important but
less used life skill which will help you to feel for
the other person. Empathy works wonders when we apply
it to your relationships- with your loved ones, classmates,
parents, friends, cousins and colleagues. It will
help you to come closer to solutions, to resolve conflicts,
and enhance your quality of life.
In
the stars below you will find an example which will
help you understand it better.

Now
that you have an idea about what empathy is here is
an exercise as how do we understand empathy.

So
by the exercise you must have understood that
-
Empathy is the ability to accept and understand
others who are different from you.
-
It means you care how others feel and you are willing
to offer emotional support.
-
It allows you to find out common grounds between
ourselves and others; by this you would be able
to make decisions that benefit you without hurting
others.
-
Empathy encourages a positive behavior towards people
in need of care and assistance.
-
This works wonders when we apply it to our relationships-
with our loved ones, classmates, parents, friends,
cousins and colleagues.

Finally it helps you to move closer to solutions,
to resolve conflicts and enhance quality of life
